"Growth in Meridian has boomed since 1990, more than tripling its population. Most of the growth has occurred at the outskirts of the city, while vacant land inside the city sits idle. These houses are along Eagle Road just south of Fairview Avenue.” As reported by Katherine Jones of the Idaho Statesman.
"Meridian, the fastest growing city in Idaho 'or the past five years, is also the 15th fastest growing city in the United States. In 1990, Meridian's population was around 10,000. The Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho says growth in Meridian is expected to continue, and demographers estimate the city will hit 80,000 people by 2015." Present population is 23,596.
“Meridian Police Chief Bill Gordon unbolts a Meridian city limits sign that was up in front of the McDonald's Restaurant on Meridian Road, showing a population of 9,596. Gordon and Meridian Mayor Bob Corrie took down the sign - the city limits now is several miles to the south.
To accommodate growth at the outskirts, in 2000, the Meridian City Council commenced planning to install $8.3 million in sewer lines in coming years.
"If Meridian didn't do it, Boise would do it for us and those places would be in Boise," Meridian Mayor Robert Corrie said. "If we did nothing, we'd be surrounded by Nampa and Boise, and Meridian would be a city of small size, without the residential or commercial tax base."
The land southwest of Meridian is higher in elevation, making sewers more expensive. So officials don't plan to extend pipes to these areas, and they won't see much growth. Widening a road will suddenly prime the land along it for development. For example, developers plan large shopping and office centers along Eagle Road. These projects, which will generate tens of thousands of car trips, weren't feasible until the road was widened recently.
Meridian was once considered the bedroom community of Boise. While people worked and played in the capital city, they lived in Meridian. But that has changed. Within the past three years, high technology businesses like Crucial Technologies http://www.crucial.com , Jabil Circuit http://www.jbil.com , Micron Electronics http://www.micron.com and Execu-Net http://www.execunet.com have been calling the Western Ada County city home.
Industry officials say the city's central location in the valley makes it a natural hot spot for his growth in technology-based development. The arrival of Shopko, Fred Meyer, R.C. Willey and Home Depot have given Meridian residents little reason for traveling to Boise for they’re shopping needs. But Meridian has a feel for its agricultural past, and its rural influence lives on." As reported by Tom Shanahan of the Idaho Statesman.
“Jabil’s Circuit Inc. began operating in Idaho in 1998, when Hewlett-Packard Co. sold its printed circuit-board manufacturing operations in Boise and Bergamo, Italy, to Jabil for $80 million. Jabil operated on the HP campus in West Boise until early this year, when it moved its 450 Boise employees to the new plant in Meridian. Then in June 2000 the St. Petersburg, Florida based Jabil, said it would expand its Meridian manufacturing facility. It has grown from about $300 million in annual revenues in 1990 to revenues of $2 billion in 1999.
Randy Della, senior director of operations said ground breaking for the expansion was scheduled July 2000 and construction would last for six months. The current site includes about 170,000 square feet of manufacturing and office space on 50-acres. Della said Jabil would add about 98,000 square feet – about 75,000 square feet of which will be manufacturing space. “The company plans to expand to about 300,00 square feet of space within the next two to three years,” Meridian Mayor Robert Corrie said, as reported by John Tucker of the Idaho Statesman in July 2000. Jabil will become the sixth major electronics-manufacturing firm with its own plant in the Treasure Valley.
With a larger space, Jabil’s Meridian site anticipated hiring 800 or more people by 2002, Human Resource Management Ron Ray said. In 2000 plant employment grew to about 700 people. That was expected to increase to about 1,000 by the end of 2000 and between 1,500 and 1,700 by the end of the year 2001. That will tighten a labor market in which companies such as Micron Electronics acknowledge 500 unfilled jobs, and some fast food outlets advertise starting wages around $8.00 an hour.”
In 2000, the city of Meridian commenced plans to build two more fire stations in up coming years, at a cost of about $1.5 million, or about $130 per household. Growth of Meridian residential subdivisions make it necessary to bring Fire Stations closer as about one-fourth of Meridian residents at the close of 2000 were outside the recommended 1.5-mile radius of a fire station. Information obtained from Tom Shanahan of the Idaho Statesman.
Downtown Meridian offers a variety of shopping opportunities. Moonbeams jewelry and gift shop is moving to 611 E.1st St. to share space with Wildwest Bakery and Cindi’s Floral. Epi’s, A Basque Restaurant, 1115 E. 1st St., is the newest dining spot. Merchants there offer a Scarecrow Festival each year to entice shoppers near Halloween.
Meridian crossroads, was under construction late 2000. Located on the southwest corner of Eagle Road and Fairview Avenue in Meridian, 14-acres of clothing, office supplies, outdoor goods, food and discount stores and other businesses bring a fast-growing city all the shopping convinces cities larger have. First phase of the project was slated to be finished October 2000. Tenants will include ShopKo, Macey’s Food and Drug and Office Depot. Downtown Boise is known for its many specialty stores, boutiques and novelty shops. The 8th Street Marketplace recently has expanded. Other downtown boutiques include Precious Metal Arts, Decor Creations, Esse Baby and Purple Sage." http://www.idahostatesman.com
Local farmers still gather in a downtown cafe on winter mornings and the city faithfully celebrates Dairy Days in a big way: the summertime fair in June features a parade, a carnival and other activities signifying a community-wide celebration.
ShopKo opened as of September 2000 with Macey’s Food and Drug, Office Depot and Old Navy planned in late 2000." As reported by Dana Oland of the Idaho Statesman September 24, 2000. "
Macey’s Food and Drug, Office Depot and Old Navy now finished, provide both Meridian and surrounding area residents shopping convince.
The increase of young families has impacted the Meridian School District more than any other district in the state as enrollment numbers continue to break previous year's records. The fast-growing Meridian district offers innovative programs, including year around schools. A new year around school, Eliza Hart Spalding Elementary School, which opened in fall 1997, serves the area. Year-round programming for West Boise students also is available at Pioneer Elementary School. Parents can choose to send their children to traditional or year-round schools, and the district is ranked at the top of academic achievement statewide.
"Meridian School District in 2000 had 23,000 students enrolled and Nampa with 10,000 students enrolled.
Families that homesteaded Meridian and those who moved to the city are part of a changing city - celebrating its past and looking forward to its future.
Many people are moving into Meridian's new homes and subdivisions." As reported by Bill Roberts of the Idaho Statesman September 24, 2000.
