“Nampa, about 15 miles west of Boise, has become a high tech center. The biggest city in Idaho's most productive agricultural county, Nampa has courted and won such high technology companies as Micronpc.com, Micron Custom Manufacturing Services and Zilog Inc.
Founded in 1886 as a railroad town, the city has a population over 50,000 and is experiencing one of the fastest rates of growth in the state. People who choose Nampa as home cite a number of attractions. The Idaho Center, which opened in 1997, is the new home of the Snake River Stampede, one of the top professional rodeos in the United States. Billed as "the wildest, fastest show on Earth," the Stampede brings top competitors to town during the third week of July.
Concerts and other entertainment fill out the Idaho Center schedule. Across town, the Nampa Civic Center is a large meeting and events facility with an auditorium that hosts a performing arts series.
And the Nampa Recreation Center, a 140,000-square-foot facility, provides a variety of recreational activities for residents. The Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge and Lake Lowell long have been pleasant nearby diversions. Pastimes include bird watching, water-skiing, picnicking and bass fishing. The city is built upon a solid agricultural base. Canyon County was reclaimed from the desert to become one of the richest agricultural counties in the United States.
Canyon County provides the majority of the U.S. supply of sweet corn seed. It also is among the top producers of sugar beets, hops, mint, onions and cattle.
Agriculture is a mainstay of Nampa's economy. In addition to farming, sugar refining and meatpacking provide hundreds of jobs for Nampa residents." As reported by the staff of the Idaho Statesman September 24, 2000.
Employment opportunities and urban amenities make Nampa a popular place to live; the population has more than doubled since 1980. Housing prices are significantly lower than in neighboring Ada County." As reported John Tucker of the Idaho Statesman September 24, 2000.”
Most of the new-home construction in 2000 was in West Nampa and West Caldwell although new starter homes are also springing up in Nampa north of Interstate 84 near one of the area's major employers, Micron Electronics Inc. The small towns of Star in North Ada County and Middleton in North Canyon County are also seeing a lot of home-building activity." As reported by John Tucker of the Idaho Statesman September 24, 2000.
“Nampa had 10,000 students enrolled August 2000.” As reported by Bill Roberts of the Idaho Statesman September 24, 2000.
“MCMS Inc., which manufactures printed circuit-boar assemblies, employs about 1,464 people in its Nampa plant. It foresees its total employment growing to 1,680 by the end of 2000 based on current market conditions. Other major players in the local economy include: Hewlett-Packard Co.; forest-products company Boise Cascade Corp.; agribusiness giant J. R. Simplot Co.; computer manufacture Micron Electronics Inc.; and mobile information management technology provider Extended Systems Inc.
"Karcher Mall, 1509 Caldwell Blvd., Nampa, was for years the only indoor mall in the Treasure Valley, and it remains a strong draw for the area. Karcher Mall newest projects includes new storefronts, new flooring and a food court.
Construction of a 14-screen Edwards theater complex adjacent to the west side of the mall is under way. Popular stores at the mall include KB Toy Store, Helen’s Gifts & Flowers, Emporium and The Bon Marche. Mall representatives said they are negotiating with several anchor and local stores interested in becoming tenants of the mall." http://www.idahostatesman.com/discover/entertainment/shopping.htm
Other commercial development has occurred along Nampa-Caldwell Boulevard, the main link between the “twin cities" of Nampa and Caldwell, and along 12th Avenue Road." As reported by the staff of The Idaho Statesman September 24, 2000.

“Development in Canyon County is moving east, and Meridian is moving west,” said Patrick Laney. Scott Stewart, Patrick Laney and Gary Benoit formed the development firm Stewart Laney Benoit (SLB) in 1999 and have the partners have a 20-year record in land development in Boise. In late 1999, the company purchased 44,000-square foot Sonna Building on the northwest corner of 9th and Main streets in Boise.
Other projects include the Canyon Park at the Idaho Center, covering 16.5-acres between Franklin Road and the Idaho Center. Construction of the first two-story, 33,000-square-foot office building was scheduled to start in March 2000 with completion expected mid-2000. Projected plans consist of four office buildings with 100,000 square feet of space. Developers having purchased a majority ownership in Sweetwater Holdings LLC (SWH) acquired approval and made agreements between the city of Nampa and SWH. SWH parent company, Northwest Parks LLC and Nampa had an agreement launched in 1996 – which included construction of a farmers’ market, a movie studio, a hotel and retail shops, which was never realized. SLB has inked a deal with Premier Alliance, a financial planning services company from down town Nampa, to occupy half of the first building.
Work is underway to extend Birch Lane Northwest of the Idaho Center to connect if from Can-Ada Road to Franklin Boulevard. The Franklin Boulevard area, near MCMS Inc., and Micron Electronics, is one of the fastest-growing residential areas in Nampa as reported by John Tucker of the Idaho Statesman October 6, 1999. Garrity Boulevard exit is a main access to the interstate. The Idaho Legislature has earmarked $2 million for Boise State University’s (BSU) Canyon County complex,” spokesman Larry Burke said." As reported by John Tucker of the Idaho Statesman October 10, 1999.
"BSU received $3.5 million from the Legislature during 2000 for the 150-acre campus in Nampa. Construction began in the spring of 2000 on a $2.6 million student recreation center that will offer state-of-the-art exercise equipment, a climbing wall and fitness classes. A 642-space parking garage opened in time for the first day of school in the fall of 2000. The university, founded in 1932 as a junior college, didn’t become a state university until 1974.
Northwest Nazarene University in Nampa is continuing to grow and add new programs. When it changed its name from Northwest Nazarene College to Northwest Nazarene University (NNU) in 1999, the Christian Liberal arts institution restructured and divided into four schools led by deans. The university has a full-time enrollment of more than 1,300 students. The essential mission of NNU, which was founded in 1913, is to develop Christian character within the philosophy and frame work of genuine scholarship." As reported by Jennifer Gallagher Oxley September 24, 2000.
“Nampa commercial expansion includes Nampa’s Karcher Mall, 1509 Caldwell Blvd. The remolding includes newly redone storefront facades that will bring new stores into the area. The project is estimated at $10 million dollars. Adjacent to the mall you’ll find new restaurants such as the family favorite Red Robin and a 14-creen Edwards theater complex on the west side of the mall. Popular stores at the mall include KB Toy Store, Helen’s Gifts & Flowers, Emporium Styling Salon and The Bon Marche." As reported by Dana Oland of the Idaho Statesman September 24, 2000.

Canyon County's second-largest community is nestled at the eastern edge of one of the remaining areas of the Treasure Valley that is still primarily agricultural.
"Shopping in the growing Canyon County continues to get better with a $10 million renovation at Nampa's Karcher Mall, 1509 Caldwell Blvd. The remodeling includes newly redone storefront facades that will bring new stores into the area. Adjacent to the mall area you'll find new restaurants such as the family favorite Red Robin and a 14-screen Edwards theater megaplex on the west side of the mall. Popular stores at the mall include KB Toy Store, Helen's Gifts & Flowers, Emporium and The Bon Marche", Dana Oland
"Caldwell is home to Albertson College of Idaho, a school U.S. News and World Report repeatedly has named the best in the West.
Caldwell also is home to a successful professional rodeo, a renowned series of fine arts performances and the annual Canyon County Fair and Festival. If the new millennium, Caldwell is in transition as civic leaders strive to create a nurturing atmosphere for business and industry that will complement the city's still thriving agricultural base. Caldwell's airport is poised to become one of the regions finest for its size, and a new industrial park is taking shape at the city's northeastern edge.
Caldwell’s growth rate is increasing as more people realize that the city offers a family-friendly environment, an easy commute to Boise, and housing prices that compare favorably with those of Nampa and Boise. Results of the 2000 Census are expected to show Caldwell's population 'nearing the 30,000 mark. Boise is competing with other cities for industrial park development. “Caldwell in Canyon County is installing water lines and wastewater disposal pipes to its new 60-acre industrial park on the east side of the city. The majority of the funding for the Caldwell Park, $1.37 million, came from an economic development grant from the U. S. Department of Commerce, Caldwell Mayor Garret Nanoolas,” as reported by John Tucker. Caldwell, permit values jumped from $500,000 for commercial projects in the first quarter last year to 2.2 million during the first quarter of 2000.
Caldwell is home to the oldest four-year institution of higher learning in Idaho, Albertson College, founded in 1891. As of September 2000, about 750 students were enrolled. Albertson College strategic plan has been designed to increase enrollment to around 1,300 students. At about $20,000.00 per student, that would give the college an annual budget of $26 million, compared to $15 million now." As reported by Jennifer Gallagher Oxley of the Idaho Statesman September 24, 2000.
